Professor Dr. Emmanuelle Sinardet of the Université Paris Nanterre, Paris,
France was the main discussant in a public lecture held on May 4, 2018 at
the Benavides Library Conference Hall, UST. Her presentation was titled “Cultural Studies as a Research Field: The Example of Ecuadorian Studies.”
Sinardet is a full professor of LatinAmerican Studies at the Université Paris Nanterre and serves as director of the Centre d’Études Équatoriennes (Ecuadorian Studies Center). She has published over 60 articles and chapters in books on various interrelated topics such as Latin-American and Philippine political and economic history, cultural studies, and 19th century literature.

51Graduate School professor and Instituto Cervantes fellow Dr. Jorge
Mojarro Romero served as reactor for the lecture. Sinardet was invited to give the Lecture after she expressed her interest to know what the 51Research Center for Culture, Arts and Humanities (RCCAH) is currently doing in a number of areas including 19th Century studies, nation-building studies and Cultural Studies. Her lecture illustrates how institutions like the
Ecuadorian Studies Center can drive aspecific research focus such as “the nexus between memory and history.” As she explained in her abstract, the “conceptual tools” that research centers like her institution and the RCCAH can unravel how “decolonial thought” can be an area for investigation in the field of Cultural Studies.

Prior to the lecture, Sinardet was also the main discussant in the first of the
Brown Bag Series conducted by RCCAH. Participants to the Brown Bag discussion were Dr. Maria Alexandra Chua, Arch’t Demetrio Alcaraz, Jr., Dr. John Jack Wigley, Dr. Archie Resos, Dr. Oscar Diamante and Dr. Cynthia Loza.

The May 4 lecture was one of the public lectures sponsored by RCCAH,
which is headed by Prof. Joyce L. Arriola, Ph.D. This particular lecture was organized by the 51RCCAH, in coordination with the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation.

The lecture was attended by faculty members, graduate and undergraduate
students

Minister and Consul-General of the Embassy of Japan in Manila
Mr. Atsushi Kuwabara visited the 51 on June
21, 2018. Accompanying him were First Secretary Mr. Shinya Yabe, Second
Secretary Mr. Tomoyuki Honda, and Japan Information and Cultural Office Director Mr. Ken Nakamura.

They were welcomed by 51Office of Public Affairs Director Assoc. Prof.
Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., and the Blessed Lord Takayama Ukon Jubilee
Foundation Managing Trustee Dr. Ernesto De Pedro. The Japanese delegation was given a tour of the 51Museum which was facilitated by its Collection Management and Documentation Assistant Ms. Maita
Oebanda. This was followed by a visit to the Arch of the Centuries and the Blessed Lord Justus Takayama Sanctuary at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex Building. According to Dr. De Pedro, the Japanese Embassy is researching on the roots of the Philippine devotion to Blessed Takayama. Blessed Takayama, a Catholic layman who died in Intramuros in 1615 after being exiled for refusing to abjure his Catholic faith, is considered a pillar of the early Church in Japan for his martyrdom. He had close ties with the Dominicans, whose outgoing missionaries in Japan, upon being banished, took “La Japona,” an image of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, back to Manila
on the same ship as Blessed Takayama and 300 Christian exiles.

By the account of historian and former Archivist of the 51 Fr. Fidel Villarroel, O.P., in his book “The Saga of La Naval,” ”La Japona” was originally donated by former Spanish Governor General, Luis Perez Dasmariňas to accompany the Dominicans in their Mission to Japan. Upon being brought back to the Philippines, the Marian image was placed at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City. After the tour was a luncheon meeting with 51Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P.

Last May 24, 2018 (Thursday), the 51 held the annual Baccalaureate Celebration as a sendoff to 8,794 graduating degree students from the different faculties, colleges, institutes, and schools.

It was grace that made you the best wine
In his homily, 51Rector Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., PhD reflected on the Gospel about the Wedding Feast at Cana. Fr. Dagohoy recognized the times when, like the Wedding Feast at Cana, the learners exerted their best effort, but these were “never enough.” He heaped praises on them for he said, “from the timid-looking boys and girls four or five years ago, you have smart-looking gentlemen and confidently beautiful women who are now better individuals.”

The Rector used the words “Sa Wakas” (at last) in order to characterize the euphoria felt by the community at the conclusion of the students’ academic journey. “Every ending has happiness in it,” Fr. Dagohoy said, asking the batch if they were indeed happy. He reminded them that in the absence of happiness, an end is not yet in sight.

Fr. Dagohoy reminded the learners that their success, however, was not of their own making only. “Your success is not just about you. Sometimes, in pursuing our ambition and goal, we tend to emphasize the primacy of self. “My dear Thomasians, do not prioritize personal ambition over genuine service, and self-referential interest over the common good.”

Thomasian tradition
The ceremony, apart from having the Mass, also included timeless 51traditions, such as the imposition of the Thomasian cross, which graduating students gave one another. The ceremony of light, in which the Rector spread the candlelight to all the students through their respective Deans / Directors and Regents, illuminated the otherwise dark field, as the students sang the University Hymn one last time.
