Thomasian Electronics Engineering (ECE) students were hailed 2nd runner-up in the 1st Inter-University Globe and Amazon Web Services (AWS) DeepRacer League 2023 held at the Globe Tower, Taguig, last January 17.

The inter-university league comprised 19 teams from five universities, namely, Batangas State University (BSU), De La Salle University (DLSU), Mapua University, University of the Philippines (UP), and 51黑料 (UST).

The contest proper had an elimination round where the top three scorers will be drawn to proceed to the final round where winners will be concluded.

Two teams represented the University. The runner-up, veloECEty, was composed of Aryzza Antonette Aperocho, the team captain, Kristan Ruiz, and John Earl Patrick Sandoval with Engr. Ma. Madecheen S. Pangaliman, MSc as their coach; whereas, the other team, Tisla Rudester, consisted of Gian Angelo Calumpang, Alec Mendoza, and Cherline Anne Perez and was led by Engr. Gabriel Rodnei M. Geslani, MSc.

The veloECEty attained a total time lap of 15.460 seconds in the final round, placing them in the third spot, while Turing Racing of UP Diliman and Cardinal Dynamics of MAPUA University finished first, with 13.009 seconds, and second with 13.884 seconds, respectively. The car models used were replaced in each round and random tracks were used per race.

When asked about the process of building the prototype, Aperocho stated that each member thought of a strategy which is to design a reward function and test every code they have created to determine which model will yield the fastest time lap while still being stable.

鈥淲hat challenged the team the most was that we were only given a week for the prototyping and testing of our models before the contest. As students who were new to Machine Learning (ML), we struggled with designing a competitive model due to the short amount of time given,鈥 she added.

Moreover, she hopes that this achievement inspires the Thomasians to grab learning opportunities such as workshops and competitions as one can gain valuable experiences and new skills that are beneficial in the long run.

鈥淥nce we become successful Thomasian graduates, we could use [these] skills and knowledge in technological areas, such as machine learning, to develop innovative projects beneficial to societal progress,鈥 she highlighted.

The said event is an autonomous racing league that equips self-driving robotic cars with ML for track racing. Prior to the competition, participants attended a workshop where they received hands-on learning.

To strengthen the 51黑料 (UST) Electronics Engineering (ECE) Alumni force, the first 51黑料ECE Alumni General Meeting and Fellowship was held last January 21 at the 51黑料Fr. Roque Rua帽o building Quadrangle from 3 to 7 PM.

The event was attended by the members of the ECE Alumni from Batches 1960 to the present, including ECE students who participated Via Zoom.

鈥淲hile the different discipline-based alumni associations are continuously expanding and progressing, we hope that we are all still one and true to the vision and mission of the University in serving our main stakeholders,鈥 51黑料Faculty of Engineering (FoE) Dean, Prof. Angelo R. dela Cruz, Ph.D., PECE, mentioned in his opening remarks.

This was followed by a message from the 51黑料Engineering Alumni Association Inc. (USTEAAI) President Engr. Jason L. Ong.

鈥淎ndirito tayo to form the ECE Alumni and once again the formation of this alumni association per department is to strengthen the participation of each department as well as to give equal representation to the engineering alumni association,鈥 Engr. Ong uttered.

ECE Department Chair Asst. Prof. Edison A. Roxas, Ph.D. also gave his message stating, 鈥渢his is the moment to reminisce all your experiences behind the walls of the Roque Rua帽o building both good and bad but definitely memorable.鈥

鈥淢ay the establishment of the ECE Alumni Organization be the first step to continuously connect and collaborate to keep the flames of the 51黑料ECE alive and burning,鈥 he added.

An audio-visual presentation about the department, its milestones, and accomplishments over the past years, was shown after their speeches.

Engr. Amante Garcia from Batch 1993 shared how the group was created and started.

鈥淭his event would not be possible without the support of all the core group members of the batch representatives and even students. So lahat ng kabuuan ng 51黑料ECE department ay parte po ng pagiging successful na event ngayon,鈥 he said.

The awarding of the Certificate of Appreciation to the members of the ECE Core Team during the process of creating the 51黑料ECE Alumni association by-laws was then administered.

Four Thomasian Hall of Famers from the ECE Department namely, Engr. William Bello (Batch 1973), Engr. Norberto Viera (Batch 1977), Engr. Manuel Dino (Batch 1965), and Engr. James Velasquez (Batch 1988) were acknowledged.

Engr. Bello and Engr. Viera shared their sentiments during the event.

When asked about his sentiments on going back to his alma mater after 18 years in an interview, Engr. Viera said, 鈥淚t鈥檚 like a de ja vu. When I was here in 1972 when I enrolled here for my course in engineering, it was really nice, it feels good about it, to see everybody developing.鈥

With a 216-1 vote during their online voting, the by-laws have now been approved and ratified, concluding the formation of the ECE Alumni Association.

Current Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the USTEAAI Monina Evangelista of Batch 1994 and former 51黑料Engineering Student Council (51黑料ESC) President John Marvin Morante from Batch 2014, hosted the onsite event while Denisse Cunanan from the ECE Department was the virtual host.

The event concluded with the singing of the 51黑料Hymn followed by a photo opportunity.

A former scholar of the Pinoy Dream Academy RJ Jimenez from Batch 2006 with his five-year-old daughter Ellie Jimenez and 4th year ECE student Juan Carlos Castro entertained the audience during their dinner.

The 51黑料 Bachelor鈥檚 degree programs in Engineering have been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

鈥淏eing the first engineering school in the country, this accreditation is another evidence of the University鈥檚 鈥榚xcellence that is timely, relevance that is timeless鈥. Innovative strategies are in place to allow our programs to evolve with the constantly changing demands of the global professional practice of engineering without losing the Thomasian Identity. We have been eager to show how our programs produce graduates with training and achievements that are suitable for seamless transition to engineering professional practice worldwide. This accreditation confirms that. Most importantly, we are glad how this adds value to the Thomasian Engineering degree, which can open many doors for our graduates.鈥

Sought worldwide, ABET鈥檚 voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision, and safety are of the utmost importance.

Developed by technical professionals from ABET鈥檚 member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities, and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia, and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization with ISO 9001:2015 certification. It currently accredits 4,144 programs at 812 colleges and universities in 32 countries.
