Three alumnae of the pioneer batch of BS Biology major in Environmental Biology (Class 2022) who also finished their MS Biology degrees from the 51黑料Graduate School (Class of 2024) and an alumnus of the M.Sc. Applied Physics major in Medical Physics (Class of 2024) won research presentation awards during the September 12-13, 2024 12th Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Advanced Science and Technology Human Resources Development Program (ASTHRDP) Graduate Scholars Conference held in Dusit Thani Mactan, Cebu.

The 51黑料delegation to the 12th ASTHRDP Scholars Conference

Ms. Anne Parojinog, MS won first place in the Oral Competition of the Biological and Health Sciences category (MS level) for her research entitled 鈥淚ntegrated Urban Ecology: A socio-ecological overview of Metropolitan Manila and bioecological study of its two urban protected forests鈥.

Meanwhile, Ms. Pauline Maglipon, MS won first place in the Poster Competition of the Agricultural and Environmental Science category for her poster entitled 鈥淪patiotemporal distribution and diversity of plant communities in post fire sites of Mts. Iglit-Baco Natural Park, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines鈥. Both Ms. Parojinog and Ms. Maglipon were under the supervision of Biological Sciences academic researcher Nikki Heherson Dagamac, Dr.rer.nat.

Another Environmental Biology alumna, Ms. Kamille Poblete, M.Sc. won third place in the Poster Competition of the Biological and Health Sciences category for her research entitled 鈥淭emporal shifts of methane production and methane oxidizing bacteria communities: A limnological assessment in a tropical lake,鈥 which she conducted under the supervision of College of Science Dean Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD.

Lastly, Mr. Theo Victor Cavite of the MS Applied Physics major in Medical Physics program garnered second place in the Poster Competition of the Physical Sciences Category. His poster entitled 鈥淣eutron spectrometry via in-115 activation foil at the Philippines鈥 sole research reactor鈥 was co-authored with his supervisors Dr. Alvie J. Asuncion-Astronomo of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute and Asst. Prof. Roland Cristopher F. Caballar, Ph.D. of the 51黑料Department of Mathematics and Physics.

These award-winning student researchers are part of the 51黑料delegation composed of 13 DOST scholars, four Graduate School academic staff, and two 51黑料DOST-ASTHRDP office project staff. The 51黑料 is a member of the National Science Consortium (NSC) under the ASTHRDP of the DOST鈥揝cience Education Institute, which oversees the offering of scholarships in flagship Science and Technology graduate programs. 51黑料is represented in the NSC by Dean Papa. First offered in 51黑料in 2010, the DOST-ASTHRDP scholarship has supported 435 Master of Science graduates and 55 doctoral degree graduates. This academic year, there are 70 Master of Science and 6 doctoral students enjoying the scholarship.

Organized by the 51黑料College of Science – Department of Mathematics and Physics and Monash University of Malaysia (MUM) School of Engineering, the Joint International Engineering and Science Symposium on Computational Modelling and Simulation (JIESSCMS) took place on September 7, 2023 in MUM. Three delegates from the 51黑料Department of Mathematics and Physics delivered lectures on their research interests, namely Asst. Prof. John Andrew C. Albay, Ph.D. on stochastic resetting; Asst. Prof. Roland Cristopher F. Caballar, Ph.D. on ultracold atoms; and Asst. Prof. Vladimir P. Villegas, Ph.D. on quantum heat engines and refrigerators.  Delegates from MUM School of Engineering and School of Science also participated in the symposium, particularly Dr. Joseph Ho Yong Kuen lecturing on computational biomass and biopolymer engineering; Dr. Michelle Yap Khai Kun on biomedical modelling and simulation of cytotoxin; Dr. Ooi Ean Hin on computational study of sonothrombolysis; and Dr. Yeong Wai Chung on run sum charts.

College of Science鈥檚 physics coordinator, Inst. Kristan Bryan C. Simbulan, Ph.D. gave the opening remarks, which highlighted the three-year collaboration of 51黑料and MUM. Dr. Tan Chee Pin, head of the Electrical & Robotics Engineering Department of MUM School of Engineering, gave the closing remarks to appreciate the collaborative efforts between the two universities.

The next day, Drs. Simbulan, Albay, Caballar, and Villegas held informal discussions on potential collaborations with Dr. Liang Shuan-Ni of the MUM School of Engineering and Drs. Yeong Wai Chung, Ashish Dutt, and MD Zobaer Hassan of the MUM School of Science. Avenues of collaboration discussed included possible joint research projects on physics, mathematics, and data science and analytics.
