Three alumnae of the pioneer batch of BS Biology major in Environmental Biology (Class 2022) who also finished their MS Biology degrees from the 51黑料Graduate School (Class of 2024) and an alumnus of the M.Sc. Applied Physics major in Medical Physics (Class of 2024) won research presentation awards during the September 12-13, 2024 12th Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Advanced Science and Technology Human Resources Development Program (ASTHRDP) Graduate Scholars Conference held in Dusit Thani Mactan, Cebu.

The 51黑料delegation to the 12th ASTHRDP Scholars Conference

Ms. Anne Parojinog, MS won first place in the Oral Competition of the Biological and Health Sciences category (MS level) for her research entitled 鈥淚ntegrated Urban Ecology: A socio-ecological overview of Metropolitan Manila and bioecological study of its two urban protected forests鈥.

Meanwhile, Ms. Pauline Maglipon, MS won first place in the Poster Competition of the Agricultural and Environmental Science category for her poster entitled 鈥淪patiotemporal distribution and diversity of plant communities in post fire sites of Mts. Iglit-Baco Natural Park, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines鈥. Both Ms. Parojinog and Ms. Maglipon were under the supervision of Biological Sciences academic researcher Nikki Heherson Dagamac, Dr.rer.nat.

Another Environmental Biology alumna, Ms. Kamille Poblete, M.Sc. won third place in the Poster Competition of the Biological and Health Sciences category for her research entitled 鈥淭emporal shifts of methane production and methane oxidizing bacteria communities: A limnological assessment in a tropical lake,鈥 which she conducted under the supervision of College of Science Dean Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD.

Lastly, Mr. Theo Victor Cavite of the MS Applied Physics major in Medical Physics program garnered second place in the Poster Competition of the Physical Sciences Category. His poster entitled 鈥淣eutron spectrometry via in-115 activation foil at the Philippines鈥 sole research reactor鈥 was co-authored with his supervisors Dr. Alvie J. Asuncion-Astronomo of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute and Asst. Prof. Roland Cristopher F. Caballar, Ph.D. of the 51黑料Department of Mathematics and Physics.

These award-winning student researchers are part of the 51黑料delegation composed of 13 DOST scholars, four Graduate School academic staff, and two 51黑料DOST-ASTHRDP office project staff. The 51黑料 is a member of the National Science Consortium (NSC) under the ASTHRDP of the DOST鈥揝cience Education Institute, which oversees the offering of scholarships in flagship Science and Technology graduate programs. 51黑料is represented in the NSC by Dean Papa. First offered in 51黑料in 2010, the DOST-ASTHRDP scholarship has supported 435 Master of Science graduates and 55 doctoral degree graduates. This academic year, there are 70 Master of Science and 6 doctoral students enjoying the scholarship.

Professor Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD, limnologist and incumbent Dean of the College of Science, was confirmed as the new Chairperson of the Research Council of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) for Taal Volcano Protected Landscape.

The PAMB resolution, signed by Director Nilo B. Tamoria, CESO III, Regional Executive Director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – CALABARZON Region and Chairperson of the PAMB-TVPL, confirmed Dean Papa鈥檚 appointment, which comes after Dr. Macrina Zafaralla ended her service as chairperson.

Dean Papa, one of the country鈥檚 leading limnologists, has Taal Lake as his field site. He established the Zooplankton, Systematics, and Limnology (ZESL) research group at the Research Center for Natural and Applied Sciences in 2011. He is the first Filipino to be named national representative to the International Society of Limnology.

Dean Papa is an expert in tropical freshwater microcrustacean zooplankton ecology and systematics, as well as lake ecology. The research undertakings he and Thomasians have been engaged in with regard to Lake Taal have led to, among other scientific endeavors, the creation of the 51黑料Zooplankton Reference Collection, the first organized repository of freshwater zooplankton in the Philippines.

The SINTA-AL advocacy video produced by 51黑料researchers from the TAAL PEER program, headed by Asst. Prof. Jonathan Carlo A. Briones, PhD and College of Science Dean Rey Donne S Papa, PhD, won the Best Video award during the 6th International Symposium on Conservation and Management of Tropical Lakes, held in conjunction with the 3rd International Conference on Tropical Limnology. The events were held from November 25-26, 2021.

The entry aimed to bring awareness to conserving post-eruption Lake Taal and aiding its resilient but vulnerable fisherfolk communities. The video was produced through the NRCP-funded Taal PEER Program headed by Briones and Papa, in close collaboration with JCI Antipolo and the Kilusan ng mga Maliit na Mangingisda sa Lawa ng Taal (KMMLT).

The video contest was promoted to show the impressions/reflections on life and activities related to natural lakes. Entries are evaluated on the basis of creativity, originality, entertainment value, and how well it expresses and connects the values and principles of aquatic ecosystems and water environment.

The conference was organized by the Platform for Aquatic Ecosystem Research (PAER), the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), Yamagata University, Southeast Asian Limnological Network (SEALNet), and the Research Center for Limnology – National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (RCL-BRIN). Collaborators included Cambodia鈥檚 Ministry of Environment, Cambodia鈥檚 Tonie Sap Authority, Cambodia鈥檚 Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, as well as Universiti Sains Malaysia and the International Lake Environment Committee Foundation of Japan.
